Seed Capital KY believes farmers to be the backbone of a healthy economy and a healthy population. To aid in strengthening their good work, we support regional farmers in the following ways:
Technical Assistance Grants. Use of these funds can take many shapes, and are geared to better organize their operations, grow the capacity of their business, learn something new, increase sustainability, and overall increase their ability to play a larger or more meaningful role in the food economy. Some specific examples include hiring a specialist to assist in organizing effective systems to record and track sales, labor hours, costs and budgets; gaining special certifications; expanding markets through increased or differentiated production; or creating more positions on the farm.
Local Food Hero Award. We created this award in 2013 to recognize and pay tribute to those who make it possible for us all to eat well, and to enjoy our beautiful agricultural landscape. This award program depends on the participation of our Commonwealth’s residents, so please don’t forget to vote, and enjoy the opportunity to give thanks to those who feed us.
Kiva Zip Loans. Seed Capital KY became a Kiva Zip Trustee in 2014, allowing us to vouch for our region’s producers as they seek strategic crowdfunding through an online microlending platform in order to grow their businesses to the next level of success. Learn more about this innovative funding means and how you can participate at Kiva Zip. With any luck, the increasing popularity and regional success of this crowdfunding to-date will allow Louisville to become a Kiva Zip City, one of only 15 such locations in the country!
Farmer Trainings. As a means to help farmers grow their operations into new market channels, Seed Capital KY sponsors occasional workshops that enable greater farming success. Past trainings have included scaling up for wholesale success, and growing profits.
